The Distinguished Service Medal (DSM) is a prestigious military decoration of the United States Army, established on July 9, 1918, to recognize soldiers who demonstrate exceptionally meritorious service to the U.S. government in positions of great responsibility.

  • Criteria:
    • Awarded for clearly exceptional service that goes beyond the normal performance of duty.
    • Recipients must exhibit a level of achievement that justifies this high honor.
  • Equivalents:
    • The DSM is the Army’s counterpart to similar awards in other branches:
      • Navy Distinguished Service Medal (Naval Service)
      • Air and Space Forces Distinguished Service Medal
      • Coast Guard Distinguished Service Medal
    • Prior to 1960, U.S. Air Force personnel were also eligible to receive the Army’s DSM.
